Even if the global coronavirus pandemic affects the entire population, Volkswagen is still moving forward with the electrification of its vehicle range.
Two plug-in hybrid models in development
The information was confirmed a few days ago: the Arteon and the Tiguan will receive a plug-in hybrid version. Will these models be available in Canada? It’s a great question and we don’t have the answer yet. However, when we see the growing investments made by Volkswagen as well as the desire to be the world number one in electric vehicles, we can sure hope that North America is part of the plans.
Both vehicles are slated to receive a facelift soon, which seems like the perfect opportunity to include plug-in hybrid versions sometime in 2021.
Interest in electric vehicles continues to grow around the world and Volkswagen is keen to electrify all models in its portfolio in the years to come. For the moment, the only plug-in models are the Golf GTE and Passat GTE. These have an autonomy of 50 and 70km in electric mode. The growing sales of these models in Europe allow us to be optimistic about the introduction of a pluggable Tiguan here, given the potential sales volume.
GTX, the new acronym for performance
Starting with the ID.4, the electric models of the ID family will have their performance version signed GTX.
The announcement was made by Volkswagen Chief Technology Officer Matthias Rabe in an interview with German automotive media. He even said that he had driven a prototype with which he could drift to test the responsiveness and maneuverability of what foreshadows the next ID.4 GTX.
For the moment, it is only a prototype and it is impossible to know when it will come out especially since the Covid-19 pandemic risks delaying the arrival of the Volkswagen ID.4 SUV.
